I have a friend who weighs about 250 but shes about 5'8. The saddle is only about 12lbs, and the horse she would be riding is like 1200lbs. Is she to big to ride him? he is short and stocky. Has a very short back to?

  5. for this size person, you want a horse that is more compact.  it helps keep the weight more evenly distributed.  with a horse with a longer back, it takes more muscles to keep it's back in place, etc, and cause strain.

as long as the horse doesn't have joint issues, or poor conformation, and the rider can balance correctly and stay light, all will be well.

i know a man who is 6'4 and 380#.  his horse is compact and about the same weight.  this horse does very well with the man.

  6. I'm 255 and I ride horses a lot.  Weight is a concern on a smaller horse, but most do just fine.  Look at how many smaller stockier reining horse are ridden by bigger guys!  If your friend is an experienced rider, the weight won't be a huge difference.  I have a friend who is 175 pounds, but to my horse she feels heavier because she is not as experienced a rider and is clunky with her cues.
