  1. Dover Saddlery and Smartpak sell  first aid kits for horses. For human you could probably just use one that you find at a drugstore. I agree with candy. for emotional problems...candy always helps. =)

  2. If your just ridding just wear a helmet and boots and have someone who works or know the barn with you and you'd be fine no first aid kits needed

  3. I don't have time to come up with a list, but if no one else mentions it, an epi pen (epinephrine injection) is a good thing to have with you whenever you'll be where bees or wasps might be, and medical care is not accessible within 20 minutes or less...this is for the human kit.  In severe allergic reactions, swelling and spasm of the larynx can occur within 20 minute...a shot of epinephrine can stave it off until medical help is available.  You have to get a prescription from your doctor for it.

Also, a Swiss army knife...it has every kind of device in it you can imagine, and will fit in your pocket....a horse I knew once drowned because the owner had nothing to cut the reins with when it got caught in them while drinking from a stream. Had she had a Swiss army knife on her, she could have cut him free.

  4. Human:

    -Gauze

-Candy (it's in case someone diabetic goes into an attack)

    -Band Aids

    -Polysporin

    -Rubbing Alcohol Swabs

-Baking Soda (if you mix it with water into a paste, it's great for bug bites)

    -Tensor Bandage

-Needle and Thread (in case you need to sew, not going to get into that)

-Safety Blanket (in case someone goes into shock)

I would consider my cell phone as part of my first aid kit, but that's always on me.

    Equine:

    -Thermometer

    -Wire Cutters

    -Bute

    -Bandages

    -Liniment

    -Aloe Vera

    -Tape

    -Gause

-Wound Cleaner (everyone uses diff. types)

    -Pliers

    -Number to your Veterinarian

Hope that helped, we don't actually have an 'official' equine first aid kit because my dad's a vet, so he has about 20 of 'em lying everywhere.

  5. Check out Valley Vet - there are equine first aid kits in there.  I'd purchase one of those, then replace what you use as you use it.

the two kits would be similar, but the equine one more extensive perhaps:

    Hydrogen peroxide (both)

    Iodine (both)

Standing wraps, polo wraps, cotton batting or leg wraps, vet wrap (that Syrvet or CoFlex or 3M Vetwrap) - couple rolls.

A clean cloth to wash out a wound

A clean container to put clean water in

A bottle to dispense hydrogen peroxide into a leg wound (it's tough to pour out of a bottle onto a moving leg) one of those you might get in a beauty supply shop that you can point the nozzle to put the stuff where you want it.

Let's see what else have I got in mine......

Oh - I've got some salve like Furizone or Healex or even Swat

    Scissors to cut bandages off

The number for the local vet.....

    A tube of Banamine

that's all I can think of...

Human ones I"ve seen often carry stuff for bee stings (even put a penny in there, a penny placed on a fresh sting takes the venom away and heals faster)

    Neosporin for cuts

    Bandaids

    Gauze or cotton compresses

Clamaine lotion for poison ivy or bites

A nice thing, if available in your area is a cool cast.  This is an ace bandage dunked in pink gooey stuff.  When it's exposed to the air, it hardens like a cast.  I have heard of a couple of people who were injured on the trail.  They had injured and arm or leg - not knowing if it was broken, they applied the cool cast to immobilize the injury - this helped them from further damage while getting to professional help.

Can't think of anything else.......I like Shreiner's or Blue Kote or Scarlex oil in mine, but some people don't use this stuff and they're not "musts"

  6. You can buy complete first aid kits already put together. For humans, any good drug store like Walgreens has nice ones. For horses, tack stores sell them and you can also buy them online from stateline tack, dover and others. They usually run about $35. It depends on how complete you want your kits to be.

  7. I won't list every last item but will provide you with links so you can see whats inside............
