Hi;

My horse wears shoes on both front feet & barefoot in back. He just thru a shoe & i had my farrier come out about a week later & he couldnt get a shoe back on the hoof that the shoe fell off because my horse's hoof was to short. it was hurting him everytime we tried. He was on the cross ties & he keep jumping so accidently he got hit alittle with one of the tools which made him bleed alittle bit, but we put stuff right on it which made it stop! So we kept him in his stall for 2 days. 2 days later the farrier talked to his vet and got some medication and came back out and applied the medicine to my horses hoof and wrapped it up. He told me to keep him in his stall for 2 weeks and he would be back. Well the trainer at my barn saw he was still wrapped up on the one hoof a week after it was wraped and had a fit, told me to take that off its bad for him this and that; so i stuck between a rock and a hard place could anyone please help me out with any advice they think i should do?Than

  1. Call your farrier and ask him if you should change the dressing or leave it on until he comes out to see your horse again. If your horses hoof was cut back too far the bandaging will help cushion the hoof making the horse more comfortable and less likely to get bruising making it easier to put his shoes back on next time. Also the bandages could help prevent infection and possible abcessing. Considering that his hoof was punctured with a metal farriers tool and that it only bled a little have you thought about a booster shot for tetnus ???

    I hope he feels better soon.

  2. listen to vet and farrier they went to collage for that and your trainer didnt

  3. Follow the farriers advice. He knows hooves, he knows what to do. Unless your trainer is a certified farrier, I definately suggest your interest is in what the farrier said. Besides, its your horse, who is your trainer to tell you what to do if you were following the instructions of a trained professional?

  4. my first question is why the farrier trimmed too short.my second question is why didnt the farrier put a clipped shoe on the horse after it threw the shoe.it sounds to me that the farrier is trying to cover his butt because he made a mistake.leaving a hoof bandaged for that length of time with a cut can cause an infection if the bandage isnt changed regularly.

  5. It sound good what your farrier is doing, but you are changing the wrap every so often, right? It will get nasty standing in poo and pee and that alone can cause problems. (Even if the stall is cleaned daily).

    Hope this was helpful.

  6. Follow the farrier. There is nothing wrong with wrapping up a horse's foot for 2 weeks. If that were so, then there wouldn't be horse-hoof booties to cover them.

    My advice, is to have your trainer call up the farrier, and the vet if they continue to throw a fit. The majority of common trainers (no offense) generally don't have through knowledge of the horse's hoof and structures, to say what is, or is not good / right for a horse's feet. Give the trainer your farrier's number, and they can chat it out. Good luck! =)

  7. I would listen to the farrier, he probably has a better idea of what he is doing in this situation than your trainer.

  8. I would find out why the horse has his hoof wrapped....did the farrier say he had an abscess?  is he lame?  Did the farrier hit him in the foot with the tool?

    Next time..if your horse throws a shoe and the farrier can't come out for a week, you should wrap it in duct tape to prevent it from getting chipped up and protect it ..especially if there are rocky surfaces around.

    Not seeing your horses hoof..it is hard to say..but what made the hoof too short to put a shoe on?

    Anyway, someone should call and see what's up and why it had to be medicated and how it is progressing.

    Hope everthing is okay.
