  1. Best way to make money at horse shows is as a groom or gofer/assistant.  If you're good at braiding you can put up flyers at local barns before the show and offer to bathe and braid horses -- I used to do this eons ago and charge $25 to bathe and braid.  You can usually do about 6-8 horses a day if you organize yourself. (That's $150-$200)  You can offer your services as a groom/gofer/assistant on show day.  This basically means you are going to be available to help the person showing with WHATEVER they need help with so that they can concentrate on showing.  You can bill by the hour, say $10-15, that way you can help more than one client a day, and easily earn an additional $100 or more.

How much you are going to be able to charge depends on your skills and experience level.  You have to be sure that you have enough confidence, horse sense and skills to work well with strange horses while providing good customer service to their owners.

    Good luck!

  2. I don't live in NC, but I do know that generally it's the same deal no matter what state you live in.  You CAN compete in a horse show for money and prizes.  However, you must usually place 1st in order to win any.  Each class entry costs money, too.  A class in a show can run anywhere from $2.50 to $100, depending on the level of the show.  If you ride western, then  a few different types of events that you can win money are: Barrel racing, Cowboy Mounted Shooting, Team Penning, and Reining.  If you need to find an exact location and show, then I would recommend looking in a newspaper or  looking on the web for horse shows in NC.  You may also consider joining the county 4-h or American Quarter horse association.  They will email you and have meetings that prepare you for shows in which you can win money.  Hope I helped!

  3. Generally shows that give out cash prizes cost money to enter. So if you need money I would suggest not entering because you have to pay a lot of money and then you only have a chance of winning money.

  4. I really haven't hear of any horse shows that pay anyone money.  I think you just get ribbons and in juried shows you get points that make the horse  more valuable

  5. If you need money..then may I suggest getting some sort of a job...

people that ride for money have money to spend because horses and showing them is not cheap plus..maybe you won't even win and then you've spent money with no return.

Also..check first because in some classes riding for money can take away your amateur status and you are considered a professional.

Showing in these types of classes is highly competitive..and highly expensive too... it is more than just showing in NC..it is showing on an entire circuit which entails money for transportation, entry fees, lodging, boarding, not to mention the type of horse that can perform and win.

So, perhaps look into getting a job at a stable or in the real world to earn a living and then just show for the fun of it.

  6. I live in the UK, but the shows that pay out cost more to enter! So your class fee might be £8 and you get a fiver for winning, plus if you don't win you lose out totally! I'd go for not entering to save your money!

To "Horse Trainer & Expert" below me - it worries me that you call yourself an expert but yet ask a question because you cannot recognise extended trot!?!?!?
