Horse skin issues - could it be mites?

She had a teeny little bug (Reddish-orange in color) crawling on her today, and she's still got the smallest bald spots on her belly and face. Could it be mites?

And, does anyone know of a homemade remedy for mites and/or any other equine skin irritants? Thank you! :D

  1. Make sure your fly spray has a skin conditioner in it.  The cheap sprays dont...

  2. Hi! :)

Their are lots of skin issues horses can have from rain rot (fungal problems), lice, mites (mange), fly irritation, bots, hives, ringworm, and so on.

You may want to contact your vet and atleast ask them if they thinks its mites and get some medication.

  3. find a fly spray that has an insecticide in it and it will take care of the little orange bug and lice. most lice are white in color, look in her mane they will look like dandruff

  4. I have horses in South Florida and around this time every year I have a few horses that break out like you are describing.  I think I have found something that works: Skin So Soft oil by Avon.  I put it in a spray bottle and either use it straight or cut it in half with some water; spray on a rag or sponge for the face.  Be sure to shake well if mixing with water as the two separate.

  5. They also call it "sarcoptic mange", "Spanish Itch", "sweet itch" etc.

Well if you're willing to try anything, here's a decades old remedy for it... Motor oil (New or used). Simply paint your horse/pony with it and it will kill the fungus/bugs. Leave it on at least a month and within 2 weeks of painting it on, you'll see new hair growing in hairless spots. What happens is, that it coats their little bug bodies and because bugs breathe through their skin, suffocates them...

I should state that you SHOULD either WASH your horse/pony with dawn or something else that will take the oil off IF you HAVE to ride before you put any tack on it.  IF you don't you WILL stain your tack and boots (I actually heard somebody did ride with it on their horse and it stained all their tack and their black boots turned brown)...  Thought that would be a no brainer.
