  1. use sunscreen and zinc (this will last longer and will stay on thicker) i would invest in a sun nose guard to help prevent skin cancer in the future. treat the sunburn with manuka honey it has antibacterial properties stays on and lasts. dont use any sunscreen until the infection has cleared as it may irritate it more. if it doesnt improve in soon i would call your vet to advise. wouldnt cause a runny nose though

    good luck

  2. my draft horse gets that all the time so I just started putting sunscreen on it works fine

  3. First, can you keep her in during the day until the sunburn has lessened? After it isn't so sore try DESITIN, it is an ointment for diaper rash. It helps heal the sores from sunburn. once she is better always put a sunblock with a high spf. This will help prevent this problem. Also when ever you are working with something new to your horse let her smell it, get her used to it before you use it and NEVER FORCE HER.

  4. They now have spray-on aloe vera! Try getting some with an SPF and spray that on her, maybe some with Lidocaine will help her out a lot, too. If you decide to use spray-on sunscreen, DO NOT use the stuff in a can! The alcohol will burn her lungs if she breathes it in! Use a spray bottle. Same with the aloe vera. To help protect it, cut the foot off of a leg of pantyhose and slip that onto her head, cutting holes for her ears and eyes, too. If you need to, put a thin cloth (like a strip of a t-shirt) under the pantyhose, over the sunburned areas that have been sprayed with aloe-vera.

  5. I have a paint with a baldy face, i use a full fly mask with inbuilt uv protection, it covers his whole face right down over his nostrils, but he can see through it fine. i put that on all through summer during the day and even into winter on sunny days. and when i'm riding him he gets sunscreen piled on his face. his brother (who doesn't belong to me) just had to have a cancer removed from above his eye because they didn't take the proper precautions...it's very important

  6. It looks to be sunburn with dermatitis.  Human sunscreen is safe to use on horses...I have a paint mare who burns and she wears a Cashel long nose fly mask which works best, but in case she gets it off somehow, I still use the sunscreen.

The dermatitis can get infected so an antibiotic/antifungal ointment for the lesions once a day is okay.  I use a cotton ball with normal saline to cleanse the lesions.

  7. My wife's chestnut gets sunburn around his nostril. Only one, as his other is darker and doesn't get affected. We got a human/horse sunblock and soother by Hunter horsecare. It works great to prevent and soothe sunburn!!

    Good luck!!

  8. ya he has pro bally has sun burn. i put an antibiotic on my horses nose and keep sunscreen on him i wouldn't ride him for a few days as to that can be pretty sore on there noses

  9. A fly mask with a nose extender like one for Kensington would work great. I saw where one person mentioned a spray on aloe. There is a Hydrogel Treatment with Phenol that I have used that is awesome as the Aloe soothes and the phenol kills the pain. I have actually used it on myself for sunburns. The company that makes it is Aloe Advantage. I love all their products.....

  10. We have an old QH whose nose burns. We just use sunscreen on him. It isn't alway easy because he is not fond of any of the scents. I have also seen a fly mask with a UV protectant detachable piece that comes down over the nose . Country Supply seems to have the best price on these.

    Good luck.

  11. Yes she does. next time put sunscreen on her

  12. if its not open sores (sorry, gross) then just put sun screen on it WHENEVER he goes out, riding, turnout, whenever.

also, get a fly mask that covers his whole face, it'll help prevent it for next time..

of its open i wouldn't put the sunscreen on unless its the super kid safe type.

and no, it shouldn't cause a runny nose.

  13. you can put sunscreen on your horses nose,i did for a while....

  14. What part of the nose?

If it is a sunburn you can use the spray on sunscreen for kids.  but from what I am hearing she probably is not going to let you.  Sometimes running cold water over it for a while before you medicate helps.  Real Aloe is the best.

When medicating remember you don't have to, at first put it on the sore spot, just somewhere close.  Then edge little by little toward the sore spot.  This will help build a little trust.  Don't be tentative.  This will set off her fear mode.  Let her know what and why you are doing it.  Tell her it will make it feel better.  Your emotions that accompany the word will help her fill a Little better, stay calm and relaxed, even when she is not, stay focused on the task, confidence will help calm her.  And when she does feel better, you would have put a token in her trust bucket.

    Good luck

  15. just put sunscreen on it

  16. I had a friend that had an appy that was baldfaced and stayed sunburnt alot. She used Desitin (the baby rash cream) on him and it helped alot. It also didn't cause a runny nose. Just be aware of how some it smells, she had to try a few different kinds to get something that didn't have a fragrance that overpowered his senses.

  17. my paint's face burns REALLY easily, so when it starts getting pinker, i rub aloe on it when i bring her up for dinner, just like you would for your own sunburn, then in the morning after breakfast, i just put some human sunscreen on her. the sport stuff that looks like a gluestick, or the gel kind seem to work best.

  18. Sunscrean works. The kind you can get in stores is the stuff you want. Just wait untill it starts healing a little bit more then when it's less painful she'll let you apply it. You may need to reapply it every few hours because it tends to wear off when their eating. It shouldn't cause a runny nose. A fly mask also works if you don't want to go out every few hours to put sunscreen on her.
