  1. where ever you go there sre going to be theives !

  2. Don't be naive - they are everywhere - i had a horse stolen last year from Staffs & mine are kept here at home on my land right behind my house (5 acre site). Both my horses are chipped & have freeze marks - stil gone tho! 5 year old showjumper! They do it late at night &load horse straight on the trailer.

What makes you think they are not from this country.

Edit - good horses cost thousands in the UK, especially in the summer.

  3. i know in northern illinois at the college that one of my friends go to one of the horses got stolen. the theives are everywhere. but there are some ways that you can prevent this.

    1) take your horses to a barn that has a reputation for safety or numbers. ( at the stable we are at we have key pads to get in and out, and video of every isle, wash room, and stall.)

    2) put up a drive way alarm.

    3) get a dog. many crooks won't go on with a plan, especially if it's barking (just make sure that it's kid friendly if you have little kids around)

    4) don't turn your horses out at night. that is asking for trouble. it's like a free invitation to come and steal your horses.

    5) if you do turn your horses out at night. along each of the gates, take a piece of wire and put a charge through it on the outside like an electrical fence. it's a crime deterrent

i hope i've helped i'm sure there are many more things but if you are concerned i would talk to your local law enforcement agency about it. about the letting people into the country thing, we really don't have a choice it's not like they wear a sticker that says i'm going to steal horses.

  4. apparently there are alot in the essex country side

  5. Most stolen horses are found and returned to their owners.

  6. I live in London and i know yards in essex, london and surrey who have had horses or equipment stolen. many are thinking that gangs are responsible, horse and hound said some are a hoax but many are deffinatley not.  have no idea what they do with them, as you need a pass port to sell them, and mine are microchipped, so my geuss is take them abroad for slaughter. its horrible to think about

  7. Consider horse prices today.  What are they like in that area?  I guarantee that around here in the USA it is definitely a hoax.  People are not stealing horses and have not for years.  The price is just too low.  Why steal a horse when you can get them given to you for free?  I have a friend that was just given a wonderful 10 year old Tennessee Walker gelding.  Kid broke.  Doesn't happen that way often.  The freebies are usually broken down nags, but occasionally a great horse is given away.

Even the good ones struggle to bring $500.  Why steal a horse for that?  Horses are too big and awkward to haul. Also not too many people are buying them.   Easier to steal something small and sell it for more.  Less chance of getting caught.  Even for slaughter it is much easier to steal something smaller that would bring more or that you could get more of than a horse.

And to the poster claiming the only places horses are selling cheap in the US are in the Midwest and East.  Nonsense!  There is no place in the US that I can not pick up a quality horse for $1000.  Granted I can not get a roping or barrel horse for that and I have no notion of what English ridden horses sell for, but I can pick up good quality, good conformation horses for that ANYWHERE  in the US then train them myself.

I believe that the nonsense was actually started as another attempt to say "See! This is why slaughter is bad!"

  8. I can't believe they are being stolen for slaughter - the price would not be worth the effort involved.

  9. There could be teams of them around the country, but as H&H said, reports were refuted in some cases.  What does it matter if they are hoax or not?  You must all be ultra vigilant or lose your horse when your guard is down!

  10. Think about how easy it would be to convince a well trained horse to walk onto a trailer. And the cost of a decent cob or showjumper, its in the thousands. Just make sure that your horses are freezebranded, microchipped and passported, so that if diaster does strike, you stand a better chance of having the horse returned. And it's not just horses, being stolen. Friends of mine just had their half bred german shepherd boxer cross stolen from their garden while they were at work. He hasn't been found.

  11. Well I have some experience in this area (not stealing horses) but having horses stolen. This is how it happened to me, a lady came and said that she wanted to buy our ponies. We had five of them, she wanted to use them to do pony rides. She wrote us a check came and picked them up and hauled away to another state. The check happened to be bad and when she tried to contact her the phone was out, and couldn't get a hold of her anywhere. So stealing can happen right in front of your face, doesnt have to be dark in the middle of the night!

  12. i live in Yorkshire and my gf has 2 horses. her friends has recently been stolen. Was a brown one as apparently it is a group of gypsies/pikies that are pinching them and they dont go for anything but Broen ones?

in and around where we live there have been a few incidents and several near misses.

    be careful!

  13. dont turn your horses out at night.

get a guard dog for the barn..

thieves are everywhere, and as another poster stated...what makes you think they are from out of the country? Nice looking horses are very valuable in countries other than the the western us.  to the other posters, it seems the only place that is having a really hard time selling horses is in the midwest and in the east...cheap horses under 5k.

  14. people steal all sorts of things
