Question:

Horse training tips needed for green 3 year old APHA.?

I recently bought an APHA gelding. He had been ridden abour 15 times before I bought him, but he's pretty willing to learn. He's been ridden in a round pen mostly and has no manners in the arena. I'm wondering if anyone can give me some tips on continuing his training...

He doesn't like to stay on the fence in the arena. He mostly moves away from the fence on the opposite side of the arena from the gate, but there's also a miniature horse along that fence as well. I'm not sure if this is due to a gate sour issue or not, but if so, how can I help this problem?

Also, he likes to decide when he wants to stop/slow on his own. and sometimes even when you give him a kick, he will just back up like he doesn't feel like going forward.

If someone has any tips that may help correct these problems, please let me know.

In addition, when he decides he wants to move towards the gate, and I try to turn him the other way, he doesn't respond. I don't want to use too harsh of hands and keep his mouth soft, but I'm not sure what to do when he backs up and turns toward the gate instead of moving forward.

PLEASE HELP.
