So there is this guy I'm trying to impress with my knowledge of horses...Smart thing to do, I know, but oh well...He has a horse of his own, and I'm just wondering what it means when people say their horse is a quarter horse, or an arab, mustang, paint, etc...

  1. Okay so a Quarter Horse, Arab, Mustang, and Paint are all breeds.

A bay Arabian would look something like this...

Heres some links that show breeds and colors.

    Breeds:

    Colors:

You could probably study up on that or something. :)

  2. If you want to impress him, impress him with your willingness to learn by getting some good books on horses and reading them. And if he knows what he's talking about listen and learn from him as well.If he 's a horseman, he already figured you out

  3. Quarter Horse, Arabian, Mustang, Paint-- All refer to the horses breed.

    Bay--Refers to the horses color.

The best way to learn horse terms and what they mean is to do the research...

I would just be honest with this person and let them know you don't have that much horse experience. You may even find that him helping you out and teaching you about horses will bring you guys closer.

  4. OK, quarter horse or Arab is the breed of horse, like telling you I have a German Shepherd, you automatically know what type , or what my dog looks like. Bay is the coloring. do an image search on a bay, mustang, quarter horse, Arab, etc. you will see how the body style of the horses are different, yet the color is the same. I had a Grulla Quarter horse, and a buckskin colored Quarter horse also, although they were both "buckskin" markings, they were different colors. Hope this helps....

  5. Well, if you tell a guy you know so much, say you know so much about something you actually know about.

Those are breeds of horses, and a bay arab is a bay coloured arabian.

Quarter Horses used to be used for racing because of there power but now thoroubreds do.

Maybe you should do your research...BEFORE telling him about all the stuff you know because you might make a fool of yourself.

  6. I really wouldnt try to impress him with your knowledge. It is really easy to spot someone that doesnt know what they are really talking about. Just show intrest in his horses and be open to learning about them. That will impress him more than anything. Anyway, thats just my opinion. Here is your answer:

Quarter Horse: Most common breed in the US. They have a stockier build but are getting lighter due to cross breeding to the Thoroughbred. They excell at pretty much anything and come in all solid colors:

This is a chestnut because it has a brown body and brown mane and teil.

Arabian: Oldest breed in the world. They are most commonly known for their dished faces, dramatic eyes and endurance. They also have one less vertebre than other horses. They come in all solid colors:

This is a dark bay. Its body is dark brown with black legs, mane and tail.

Mustang: This is the wild horse of the west. It is a cross breed of pretty much everything. Comes in all colors shapes and sizes. Mustangs off the range will have a freezeband on their neck:

Bay (brown with black points) and a star on its forehead.

    Freeze brand:

Paint: A paint is a spotted horse with two APHA (American Paint Horse Association) parents. A horse that has spots but is not out of registered parents is a pinto (which is a color NOT a breed) Paint is a color that is a breed:

Thoroughbred: Mostly know for being race horses but they are great horses for pretty much anything once retrained. These horses come in any color (not so much paint but I have seen an artical on a foal that came out with spots due to inbreeding.

    True black horse.

Those are pretty much the most common breeds (except mustang) but there are hundreds more.

  9. LOL - I got a laugh when I read this but seriously, they are mostly breeds of horses.

Go to Wiki (type Wiki into Google it will be 1st search top of page. then go type mustang into wiki)

Here is a link to Wiki Horse breeds:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Ho...

  10. Here's a link to an alphabetical list of horse breeds- look up all the breeds you want to know about and it will give you lots of pictures and information.

Bay is a color, it means the horse is brown bodied with a black mane and tail and black feet.  Other basic horse colors are:

    Gray (self explanatory)

    Chestnut (solid reddish-brown)

    Black

Pinto (white with brown, black, or red patches)

White (actually a gray horse that's faded to look white)

Roan (red or black horse with white hairs that make it look strawberry pink or blueish)

    Palomino (gold with white markings)

Here's the link for the breeds:

And here's a link for some various horse colors:

  11. qt horse, arab - are breeds

    paint- type

    bay- color

  12. welsh pony-type

    quarter horse -horse

  13. Breeds of Horse, like Breed of dog a German Shepherd, Beagle, Golden Ret, and so on.  Same thing.

    There is

    Belgian

    Arabians

    QH or Quarter Horse

    and many many more:)

Instead of trying to impress him with "what u know", (and really don't) ask him, and he'll love that what does this mean, and O that's cool how did you?  That'll make him more happy to help out, and that you are being truthful.  That's what it's about.  Friendship, not BS:)

  14. Go to Wikipedia and search "horse breeds" or "horse colors" to find out. There are a LOT of breeds and variations of breeds (same with colors) and Wikipedia usually does a good job describing them. The kinds you listed are breeds. Interesting thing is, Paint horses are a breed, but Pinto horses, which are the same coloring as Paints, are a different registry, and Pinto is just the color. So, all Paints are pintos (unless they're breeding stock, which means they pass on the paint gene but are solid colored), but not all pintos are paints.

And read a lot of horse books, they have a lot of information.
