  1. Not enough information.  Do you mean the horse has a

    sore on its back??

If yes, run your hand over his

    back and check it carefully.

Is it open and raw, or has it

    hardened?.

Any sore on your horses back

is usually caused by not placing the saddle pad on smoothly., and or a saddle

that does not fit the horse, or

has a protrusion that is rubbing your horses back.

All of these need to be taken

care of.  Don't ride the horse

until the sore has healed and

    you get a better saddle.

A horse with an actual sore

    back should be diagnosed

by a vet.  I have seen horses

    get "broken down" in their

backs and become sway backed from carrying an over-

weight rider over time, or riding a colt.

  2. To find if you has a sore back, separate your index finger and thumb just wide enough as to where his spine is between them. Apply continuos pressure while running your fingers down his back. If he arches it or seems unhappy or uncomforatble while doing it, he most likley has a sore back. It could be the saddle doesn't fit properly and the gullet is too tight for his whithers.

I would also recommend you run your hands down each leg, checking for heat or swelling, incase it is a leg injury.

If you don't notice any injuries, I'd contact a local trainer who is willing to answer your problem with him stopping. It could just be a new bad habit. If you do notice an injury, stop riding him, and make an appointment for your vet to come out.
