Horseracing in the 50's?

For purposes of story writing, what are some differences of horse racing in the 50's compared to now? I'm looking for all angles... The horses, trainers, owners, drug use, etc, etc.

If you can go the track,go and talk to old timers or older trainers if they aren't too busy.  Good luck with your project. Your library may have old magazines,check it out.
