  1. In short, if the frog is overgrown - they trim that down to a correct size to the horse's hoof. They trim the sole of the horse's hoof as well - to keep it growing healthy (as well as other things, but that'd take a lot more explaining.. heh). Then they clip the long part of the horse's hoof wall (the part you see when you look at a horse on all fours). They rasp the bottom, as well as the outside of the hoof to proper proportions. That is the basis of a trimming. If they get shoes, then the farrier/black smith will take a horse shoe (or hand-make one), and fit it to the horse's foot, nail it in, and that's the basis of it =)  Hope it helps!

  3. Well its a pretty simple prosess. The Blacksmith takes off the old shoe (which involves taking out the nails), then grinds down the hoof and clipps it, then either the black smith does hot shoeing or normal shoeing. Hot shoeing is where the blacksmith heats up the shoe, places it on the hoof (which melts the hoof to make the shoe fit better). Smoke does come up when hot shoeing occurs so maybe your horse doesnt have that because it scares some horses. Then he takes the shoe off, gets nails and puts it in. After that the smooths the hoof down. Its a very simple process that does not hurt you horse. If your horse does not have hot shoeing the blacksmith fits the shoe, nails it in and then smooths down the hoof.

    Hope this helped!

  4. 1 you need to watch just to know what is going on. If you ever sold him, or if he ever had a hoof injury, you need to know. The end of the hoof (dead or over hung hoof) is clipped of all around. He will then saw it down to make a nice smooth surface. Then will take off the dead frog and inside. He will then add the shoe (which i hope you know what it is). That is the basics, he'll smooth it all down. The best way to learn is to watch.

  5. The process is different depending on the horse. Some horses need "hot shoeing", where the shoe is heated up to be red hot, then is applied to the hoof this way, to custom mold to the horse's hoof. The hoof is trimmed and filed beforehand in every shoeing, and is cut to maintain a desireable angle and length of the hoof to keep the horse sound. This is different for every horse, and only trained professionals know exactly what to look for. Then the shoe is placed, and sometimes hammered to fit just right, the clips (if the horse needs them) are also hammered into place, and then nails are hammered through the nail holes and through the outer part of the hoof. The ends of the nails are clippe doff and bent down, and voila! I reccommend watching the next time your horse gets shod, it is very interesting.
