I have always wanted a horse. I am now married and things are finally settling down and my husband and I are going to get a horse sometime soon. We go to rodeos every so often and I love them. I love everything about horses and have ever since I can remember. My parents would never let me have one and I am so excited to finally get one. My question is--I am 23-am I too old to start doing things with horses? I thought about barrel racing but probably cannot afford it. What else is there? I dont know much about the shows and such so any help would be appreciated. I think doing something almost every weekend with horses would be awesome but do not want to travel far. thanks

  1. ur never too old to start doing things with horses!

  2. You are never too old to start riding.  You do not really have to follow the horse shows or rodeo.  Maybe trail riding is more your style.  With the trails, you go your speed, on your schedule and where you want to go.  Not a competitive sport unless you want to make it that.  Lots of people out there that enjoy the same things, you can camp and ride as well.  Stop at some local stables or barns to see what they do with their horses.  Find some local Wrangler camps (camping spots for horses) and talk to those people, they will all be glad to give you some insight and you may very well find what you want to do with your new horse.  If you have a very good friend or neighbour that is into horses...spend a day with them to see what goes on in their life.

  3. You are more than young enough to ride.

I would suggest getting a laid back, 10 year old horse if this is your first time. Try and get one with a laid back temperament and good feet and balance.

There are many types of riding out there. You can buy a book on horses and look them all up - just figure out what you like!

You will want to take lessons, probably prior to getting a horse. Your instructor can help you decide on a good path to take in the horse world.

  4. no your not to old, just start riding, ride as much as possible and just talk to the most experienced people you can find, and listen to everything they say. depending on where you live there has to be a few local events. google them.

  5. 23 is never to old to do anything on a horse.

I absoulutely love trail riding on the Mapleton trails and mstering cows on the neighbours property
