The Die Knappen sporting director has hailed his team’s efforts in the UEFA Europa League this season and is satisfied with the campaign thus far.
Schalke played a 2-2 draw in the second-leg of the UEFA Europa League quarter-final against Athletic Bilbao and were knocked out of the competition. However, Heldt feels that his side should be proud of their performance in the
return leg as they played superbly.
Die Knappen suffered a shock loss in the first encounter at the Veltins-Arena and were downed 4-2 by the Spanish side. Four away goals were always going to be difficult for the away side to comeback from and the Germans had to
settle for a draw eventually at the San Mames in http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Spain-c3011.
Heldt admitted that the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Royal-95-c40387 Blues played a brilliant game and deserve all the applause for their efforts. He insisted that the team made some great chances and were brilliant in going forward. The chief rued some missed opportunities
and insisted that the tie could have been Schalke’s if the players had taken their chances.
Nevertheless, the sporting director is impressed with the display thus far this season and is looking forward to ending the campaign on a high.
“We gave everything and played a great game. We had the chance to make it 3-2 with http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Lewis-Holtby-c22175 and maybe then we would have got a fourth goal, but we leave Europe in honourable fashion. We wanted a bit too much in the first leg
and that was our downfall,” he was quoted as saying in an interview to the club’s official website.
The chief stressed that Schalke played better football than the likes of Manchester United and Manchester City and is confident of a successful future.
“We played a good competition and teams like Manchester United and Manchester City went out of the Europa League before us. Schalke have done a lot of good and what our team achieved was top drawer,” he concluded.
