Hospital work abroad this summer?

I'm a potential med student and I need to do vlunteer work. I already plan to work in and old people's home and have some hospital work observation for about 4 days lined up in the UK.

However, I would dearly love to travel to somewhere that really needs help but isn't that dangerous (i.e. in terms of crime etc so my parents might actually let me go!).

How should I organise this? Who with? When is the best time? Where? Bear in mind that I only wish to do this for a week or two in the summer holidays.

Hospital assistance would be ideal...

  1. volunteer work is good Volunteer work in a hospital.

  2. Most countries require work permits and they don't like giving them. Perhaps some volunteer work. Western USA away from large cities  is quite safe. Portland Oregon is low crime and beautiful.
