  1. I think you will like this place - I did.

  2. Few hostels in Barcelona (or Spain, for that matter) can claim "charm" as one of their amenities. Hostels (called "hostales" in Spanish and "hostals" in Catalán) are merely places to lay your head at night for little money. Hotels, on the other hand, are more likely to have some charm - but you'll pay for that.

All the above said, I encountered one hostel in Barcelona in which I spent 3 nights and it was FULL of charm. It's the Hostal Martina Bailen (web: http://www.HostalMartina.com ) in the Eixample district, about a 10-minute walk from the Plaza Catalunya.

It's located in an typically old building with lots of turn-of-the-19th-century architecture dripping about, a large entry in the building, HIGH cathedral ceilings, and elevator, and a pretty staircase.

The hostel itself has some of the largest rooms I'd ever seen, very tall ceilings, crown molding, century-old mosaic tile floor, some rooms have private enclosed balconies/terrazas. The sparse room furnishings are pretty modern though.

I really think this place is the most charming of all in Barcelona.
