I'm going to stay at HI-Chicago.

I think it's near Grant park,

it's located in a little south from downtown,

so is it safe?????

I know the southside of downtown is very dangerous.

I really wanted to know this.

  1. The south loop is fine. It's improved now, and there are million dollar condo's and high class hotels. Mayor Daley lives in the South Loop.

  2. You'll be fine. HI-Chicago is not "south from downtown." It IS downtown, precisely one block south of the Loop proper, on Congress.

This is not to imply that you should exercise no caution whatsoever. You ought to use your common sense anywhere in the city (or country, for that matter).

And not everything south of downtown is "very dangerous." Visitors to Chicago would do well to explore regions beyond the downtown area; too many leave thinking they know what Chicago is even though they've only seen sites such as Navy Pier, the Sears Tower and the Cheesecake Factory. That's Tourist Land, not Chicago.

  3. make a supply list of pepper spray, crow bar, whistle, & tae-kwon-do lessons

  4. No place is really safe or dangerous in the Chicago area (city and suburbs) irregardless of the racial and economic demographics of the area. You just have to watch your back and be careful of your surrounding especially if you're a young lady or an elderly person. Check out Metromix Chicago and Yelp Chicago for things to do in Chicago and its suburbs:

  5. It is safe, that is not even very far to the south of downtown anyway:)

It is a good area to stay because its right near everything and close to plenty of transportation, etc.

It is a big city downtown so take the usual precautions but it is not a 'dangerous' area.
