  1. I have always found the Hostelling Internaional (HI) / International Youth Hostel Federation (IYHF) hostels to be clean, safe, and reliable with professional staff. ENgland & Wales have their national Youth Hostel association http://www.yha.org.uk/ as does Scotland http://www.syha.org.uk/SYHA/web/site/hom... both of which are affiliated to the IYHF.

Indpendant hostels tend to be one extreme or the other. Some, I have found to be excellent - clean, friendly and safe. Others can be unfriendly and not particularly clean. Although, having said that, the standard of independants in the UK is generally higher than abroad.

The major international hostels can be found on http://www.hihostels.com/ and http://www.hostels.com/en/index.html lists the makjor international independants. Visit http://www.hostelworld.co.uk/ for listinsg of HI and independant listings.

  2. There is one good hostel I can recommend in Dublin City. It is in Dame St and is called Kinlay House. Glendalough in Co Wicklow has a hostel and all the cities like Galway and Cork. There are also several in Killarney. Best thing is to go on the websites and check them out.
