Hosting exchange students?

I want my mom to host a foreign exchange student from Japan (I would go to Japan, but I get homesick to the point that I fall physically ill) and she wants good reasons to do it. I already know things like friendship and learning, etc., but I need more to win this. Please help. Thanks in advance :)

  1. I am a international exchange coordinator.  There are so many great things about hosting!!  The program I am with is the largest program in the country.  We screen our students extremely well on many different levels before we accept them into our program. They all speak English and are exceptional students.  They bring their own spending money and insurance.  The host family needs to provide a bedroom and food.  Our system is set up where you work with a local coordinator who is there for the student and the family the entire school year.  The coordinator will keep in contact with you to make sure everything's going well and to help you with anything.  They also hold a couple meetings at the beginning of the year one before the students arrive to help you get ready for them and one after the student arrives. With our program you are never in this by yourself.  I can answer any questions you may have.  I can also send you the applications of our Japanese students who are looking to be placed.  The application includes a picture, information about themselves that they filled out, grades, an essay to their potential host family that they are required to write without any help, and recommendations from the students teachers and our program staff.  You can reach me at:

  2. tell her that hosting an exchange student from japan would be a once in a lifetime oppurtunity, and not only would help your education, but also the japenese student's.

And tell her that having an exchange student stay with you goes in your school record and will look good on your CV.

  3. Being an exchange student and hosting one are REAL eye opening experiences.  I toured Europe right out of high school with an orchestra.  And when I was in my mid to late 30's I hosted a kid from Siberia.  It's a huge opportunity to affect the lives of people half way around the world.  The educational experiences are unlimited.  You are immersed in a total change of culture.  Dependent upon your abilities to speak the languages, you may also find a real challenge there as well.  It's pretty much a once in a life time opportunity.  Tell your parents they may also get some great tax deductions for hosting!
