It time of the year when the FIFA’s executive committee gets together and decide who will host the 2018 World Cup. The committee meets on Thursday after months of meetings, planning and campaigning accusations to announce its decision.
One thing is for sure; the 2018 world cup will be played in the northern hemisphere as all four bids have come from European nations.
After 44 years England has finally decided to bid to host a world cup final. The supporters from the football frenzy nation are extremely jubilant about their country’s decision.
England plans to host the mega event across 12 cities. Some of the cities are London, Manchester, Nottingham, Sunderland, Birmingham and Bristol. FIFA has evaluated the bid as low risk. The good things about English venues are the standard of the venues,
good transportation facilities, marketing and state-of-the-art access of information technology. The drawback raised by FIFA is the very less availability of hotels near the venues. This can badly affect the chances as the players follow some vigorous routine
through out the day.
The second country bidding is Russia. Russia has selected the following cities for bidding. FIFA has evaluated the bid as medium risk. The good thing about Russia is that it plans to build 13 new stadiums and has hotels near the stadiums. The drawbacks for
Russia are the transportation issues and the massive new buildings to be made especially for the event. The completion of the stadiums has been raised as an issue and which has raised the risk associated.
The third bid is by co-hosts Spain and Portugal. Both countries are known for their football fever.
Both the countries have selected the following cities for bidding, Barcelona, Madrid, Valencia, Lisbon, Seville, Bilbao, Porto, Zaragoza, Badajoz, Santander, Malaga, La Coruna, Donostia-San Sebastien, Valladolid, Vigo, Murcia, Alicante, Gijon.
FIFA has evaluated the bid as a low risk. The plus points in the bidding are the availability of transportation, good hotels close to the venues and top-notch stadiums. The drawbacks raised by FIFA are the complications that come with co-hosting and the
unavailability of good and foolproof security plan.
The last bid has been placed by Belgium and Netherlands. Both the countries have selected the following cities for the bids, Amsterdam, Enschede, Rotterdam, Eindhoven, Antwerp, Genk, Liege, Charleroi, Brussels and Ghent. FIFA has rated the bid as medium
risk and the only plus point they have is the quality of stadiums. The drawbacks listed by FIFA are the complications with the co hosting, not enough hotel rooms and the lack of government guarantees have also dropped their chances.
The procedure is very simple for voting. All 23 members get a vote in the meeting and the President of FIFA Sepp Blatter also has a vote. The procedure sounds very simple but the recent polling has been complicated due to the suspensions of two members from
Oceana due to alleged corruption. The inside news is that there will be a tough battle between England and Spain-Portugal bidding. Let’s keep our fingers crossed till Thursday.
