Question:

Hot Tub Wiring Help - North Carolina?

I am needing to wire a hot tub, hopefully to code. I have done many DIY electrical work, but I know that there are some strict code for hot tubs. I have space in my main panel for the 50A breaker, which is conveniently located near the tub location. I know that I need GFCI. I also have an existing electrical outlet, also GFCI within 10 feet of the tub. Does anyone know of any other code issues that I should be aware of?

  1. You need a 50 amp GFI in your panel. From there use 6/3 outdoor wire to a quick disconnect box that must be no closer then 5 feet from your tub and in plain sight.  You must use 6 gauge wire.  Yes calling your local is a great idea.  Where in NC?

  2. you will more than likely need an additional gfci breaker in a disconnect before you hook into the hot tub. in this order  main 50A GFCI breaker--> 50A GFCI disconnect--> hot tub with this set up you are more safe than you can think.

  3. Do yourself a favor and call your local inspector and ASK THEM.   You can tell them you are thinking about adding a hot tub and want to know what is involved to figure expense's.  Your local codes may vary from community to community.

In my area you are required to have a separate disconnect next to the hot tub.

Your existing GFI will not be rated or wired for a 50 amp circuit.  You need to have a minimum of 10 gage wire,  8 gage may be required under your codes.
