Hello everyone. Can someone tell me what is going on with my hot water heater. Sunday / Monday morning like around 3am I was awoke to a buzzing sound well my hot water heater was doing the buzzing. Well turned off the gas and drained the water released some of the presser in the valve but it still buzzes. Why

  1. Probably a older tank with a lot of sediment on the bottom.

    When the flame is on , and heating  --- then it makes "sounds".

    Clean/flush out the tank good ---- perhaps it's time to replace it.

  2. If you turned off the gas & it continued to buzz, I would check to see if it isn't something else that's buzzing (and the sound is being conducted by the water piping).

    If you have  recirculating hot water it might be a pump.

I would recommend you call a licensed plumber to come look at your water heater.  One problem could be the T&P valve ( brass valve with little chrome lever) the spring inside could be worn out causing a buzzing noise, as water passes through. These valves should be tested and checked every 2 years.

    Rumbling sound would be sediment build up at the bottom of your water heater.

    The age of the water heater will play a factor. Average lifespan of a water heater is 10 years. The first 4 numbers of the serial should give you a manufacture date.
