  1. Yes. Hot air is less dense than cool air, so hot air rises and cool air falls.

    It's handy to think of it this way. Two air masses of different temperature that 'collide' will not behave in such a nice, neat manner, though.  The air mass 'rolls' around, creating wind, tornados, etc...

  6. Yes, as said, but not quite that simply. As air flows downward it is compressed adiabatically and gets hotter. Example, the Santa Ana winds of southern CA.
