Hot at home Calgary Flames defeat New Jersey Devils 6-3 - NHL Update
This game was over even before it started as the Calgary Flames continued their brilliant form at home, with a 6-3 victory over the New Jersey Devils at the ScotiaBank Saddledome in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, on Tuesday, January 10, 2012.
The Flames looked in no mood to start the game slowly and four quick fire goals in the first period put the game to bed.
Devils tried to come back in the second period, but the Flames never took their foot of the pedal and scored two more goals to wrap up a well deserved win.
The victory helped Flames win two games in a row and Calgary will now hope to string together some positive results to continue its chase for a playoff berth.
The franchise’s record now stands at 20-19-5 as it remains 12th in the Western Conference, four points behind the Los Angeles Kings who occupy the eighth position in the table.
Flames' forward, Lee Stempniak, was happy with the win but hoped that the Flames could put together similar performances while away from the Saddledome.
"Hopefully we can bottle that up and bring it on the road," Stempniak said. "We'd like to see some more consistency on the road and play with the same mentality and see the same results."
The New Jersey Devils tried their best as Flames' goaltender, Miikka Kiprusoff, picked up 35 saves during the game to keep his team’s lead intact.
Adam Henrique, who scored a goal for the Devils, lamented his team’s poor start to the game and rued the individual mistakes which led to such a big loss.
"We were flat in the first," Henrique said. "We made a few mistakes, myself included on the third goal. You can't fall asleep for 20 minutes here. We dug ourselves a hole that we couldn't get out of tonight."
Jay Bouwmeester, Cory Sarich, Curtis Glencross and T.J Brodie’s first period goals set up Flames' win in the first period.
Bouwmeester kicked off the scoring at the 5:54 mark dial to put the Flames ahead, while Cory Sarich put the Flames up by two goals only 90 seconds later.
Glencross, who also picked up three assists later in the game, made it 3-0 at 13:12, while three minutes later, Brodie scored on the power play as he slapped the puck past Devils' backup goalie, Johan Hedberg.
Martin Brodeur and Hedberg did not have to face many shots but the Flames were clinical and made all opportunities count.
The Devils got on the scoreboard for the first time in the game, late in the second period, with Ilya Kovalchuk beating Kiprusoff for the first time.
At 16:38 Lee Stempniak got the Flames back to four goals up, making it 5-1.
The Devils made it 5-2 with a shorthanded goal by Adam Henrique at 17:24 in the second period.
Patrick Elias third period goal to make it 5-3 on the power play with just six minutes gone made things interesting as the Devils turned the s***w but Kiprusoff held firm and Flames made it 6-3, three minutes later to end the game.
The Devils will next face Edmonton Oilers at the Rexall Place on Wednesday while the Flames host Anaheim Ducks on Thursday.
