  1. Hi there

Unfortunately there is no definite correct way to tie your obi. I have been shown various ways over the last 17 years by different instructors. Each putting their own slant on the subject. Its ryu specific in some cases.

The Golden rules to an equal looking belt are as follows

    1. Everything should be proportional.

    2. Knot should be in the centre and the side bits of the belt should hang out to the side and both be of equal length.

    3. There should be no visible cross over of the belt round the back and sides until it reaches the knot in the middle.

I could go on with the exact details but it would just take ages to explain it all exactly. Best to get a sempai or shihan to show you how its done.

The next level is how to traditionally fold a Gi and tie it up using your belt so you don't need a bag to carry it! ;-)

And if you ever figure out the correct way to do a tie please let me know. Been struggling with that one for the last 3 decades! lol

    Best wishes

  2. It wraps around you twice.

    Rule of thumb:

    1.) Right over left

    2.) Left over right

    3.) pull it tight

When you do step 1, be sure to go under both layers of belt.

  3. Find  centre of belt and place on belly button with tape on your right side.

Both sides wrap around waist with one side tucking under the other side all the way around. (If you do not tuck one side under, the belt will be incorrectly crossed behind the back.)

The side that ends up on top is tucked under both pieces, then grasp both ends to tighten.

The top piece is then placed over the bottom and pulled through the hole.

Tighten the belt and then fold the belt ends down so

that the stipe is visible on top as the belt ends hang down.

  4. Put the middle in front.

Bring the ends all the way around until they are in front again.

    Tie a square knot.

  5. simple fix really.....ask your instructor to show you how to do it. thats what he/she is there for!!

you can buy a new belt.

when i was in tkd, it was bad to let it touch the ground.
