Hot favourites, Scott Waites and Dean Winstanley, face departure from BDO
Darts has once again proved that it is a game that requires cautious nerve handling, apart from all the skill and technique that remains an integral part of the cocktail.
In the remarkable events that took place at the BDO Darts Championship at Lakeside, Scott Waites and Dean Winstanley had to suffer the pain of departing from the championship, after both these top seed players were chucked out by Ted Hankey and Alan Norris,
respectively.
Waites was being termed as the top favourite for the encounter, despite the fact that Hankey had been the winner of the BDO Championship twice.
But it was yet again proved that keeping a hold on one’s nerve is what comprises the key ingredients of success in darts.
The game started with the ball in the court of Waites, who was able to score quite easily and dominate all rounds.
However, at the same time, Hankey was successfully able to rescue himself from the humiliation of a knock out in the early stages of the game.
He bounced in the game a couple of times and once reached to the point of a deciding shot. His miss of first five showed that he was able to maintain a firm grip on the game.
On this basis, he was able to check out firmly at 144, along with an exciting 4-3 victory, showing Waites the door towards the exit.
However, the night of jolts was not over yet, as the other encounter proved to be an upset as well. Dean Winstanley, after cruising into the second round, faced a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Alan Norris.
Despite the two hours’ delay in the beginning of the match, Norris was in no mood to give up his warrior spirit which was blatantly manifested by the procedures and techniques he applied, coming all the way to level the scores by 3-3.
Winstanley, being an experienced opponent, failed to demonstrate his skill and technique to the fullest, whereas the amateur finally managed to clinch victory by 4-3 to reserve his seat in the next round of the event.
Norris, in his next encounter, will meet Christian Kist, meanwhile, Hankey will battle against Martin Atkins.
