  1. maybe it's a cicada...

  2. i like peanut butter!!

  3. Based on your description, I am sure they are cicadas.  They live in the ground for several years before crawling out, climbing up trees, molting, singing (what you are hearing), mating, and then dying.

  4. I don't know where you live, but it sounds like what you're describing is a Cicada.  These are wonderful, harmless, huge fly-like insects that emerge out of the ground from under trees in the summertime on certain years.  When there are thousands of them their sound can be almost deafening.

There are many different species of Cicadas.  And, their life cycle and habits are extremely interesting.  Eggs are laid into the inside of the ends of tree branches using their long ovipositers.  The branch from where the eggs were laid to the tip, dies.  They are natures "pruners", and help keep the trees healthy in this regard.  After the eggs hatch, the nymphs fall to the ground and burrow down to the tree roots.  There they feed on the sap of the tree, doing it no harm whatsoever.  Believe it or not, some species will stay down there for "19" years.  Then, all at once, all the nymphs dig to the surface.  There they climb up the tree trunk.  The skin on their backs splits open and out crawls the adult with wings and the coloration of that species.  Some are quit beautiful.  It's at this time, they begin the noise you heard, by rubbing their wings together.  This sound attracts a mate, and after mating, the eggs are laid and the process starts all over again.  As adults they only live a couple of weeks, but as nymphs under the ground they live many, many years.

They are a very beneficial animals to our planet and do great good in helping keep our earth healthy.  They not only help the trees, but they are a bountiful food source for many animals, like birds, predatory insects, lizards, bats, rodents, and others.

If you think they are loud here in the USA, you should hear them in the tropics.

  6. I can't personally think of any insect that makes a screeching noise, at least it isn't high pitched, but I think you might be thinking of a cicada. That or you're hearing grasshoppers, which people often seem to mistake for cicadas, they have a similar sound. My guess would be cicadas, though.
