If tommorow you got laid off from your job in a GM plant, shortly after GM just picked up most, if not all of the buy out of Tony Stewart's contract with Joe Gibbs. In some ways, it is kind of like a city shuting down a homeless shelter to pay for recycling program. Does it make sense to you? I know marketing is a big part of selling cars, but with times so hard for GM, does it make sense? Would it not make for some bad press if the number got out? Would you still cheer for Tony if you lost your job so GM could help pay for his new team?

I know it is a lot more complex than my question implies, but what are your thoughts?

  1. Getting laid off sucks no matter what the company is or for what reason.  However if you are interested a little news you might not know about.  VW is getting ready to build a new automotive plant in Huntsville, Alabama.  There are going to be hiring some 16,000+ people is what we have been told.  I am sure someone with prior experience would be very welcome addition.

  2. When people lose jobs it is usually because companies are trimming the fat...!!! I wouldn't be mad.

There is a story in the Bible (new testament) about the denarius. The denarius was a Roman coin in Biblical times. The story is about 3 workers that worked in field for a day for a man. One started early in the morning. The other started later in the day and the other started working late that evening.

At the end of the evening when the owner of the field payed the workers he payed them all equal amounts. The one that started in the morning was mad because the other two who had not performed equal amounts of work yet they received the same amount of pay (a denarius)

This story was told by Jesus himself and Jesus's explanation was this. It was the man's money who owned the field. He had a right to spend it however he wanted.

  3. Whatever money GM will spend on getting Smoke back in a Chevy will not come off the backs of the working man. All the big corporations have funds for all kinds of things. Some are way over-funded, some not funded so well. If they had to, they'd take money from an overly full fund and add it to the "Let's Get Tony Back" Fund.

Does anybody cry that the CEO and the COO make 40-50 million dollars, not counting stock options, but the blue collars get their pay cut in half?

They've got the bucks, don't worry.

  4. The GM racing division and the manufacturing is two separate financial divisions. What monies used to buy out any or all of the contract does not include anything with the manufacturing.

But the underling meaning of your question, survey is taken well.Personnally I would still be a fan even though part of me would not be pulling for him.

  5. I have not seen one bit of evidence that Chevrolet paid anything. The formal word was Tony was let out of his contract, not bought out. Post a link to this actually happening not a rumor from a week ago with no back up. The only stipulation I heard was Tony signed he wouldn't recruit team members.

Even if there were some money involved it is marketing money. If companies having hard times stopped marketing that would end the company. GM is not  failing and Toyota has yet to pass them as the worlds largest producer of vehicles.
