The hot water throughout my house isn't working, but the flame is lit... I don't understand why the flame isn't causing the water to be hot.

  1. check thermostat

  2. Did you check the thermostat? If there is water in the boiler and you see a flame then chances are the thermostat  might not be working properly.

  3. If you have a gas heater, make sure the gas is on, then relight the flame.

If you have a electric water heater, make sure power is on, then reset thermostat.

  4. Is the flame you are talking about the pilot light?  you may need to turn up the thermostat on the gas valve of the water heater to get the burner flame to come on, if it is turned up to its highest setting, then you may need a new gas valve.  if the water heater is more than 10 years old, consider getting a new water heater

  5. try to turn the thermostat up higher, also check to see if your set to just the pilot setting. maybe you need a new thermostat or even to flush out the water heater
