Hot water tank won't turn on...?

Hey..

I woke up today trying to take a shower but with no hot water. Went upstairs checked out/turn on pilot...but no go! I'm getting sparks from the ignitor when firing.....but no gas and burner won't run.

What's wrong???

Two weeks ago..I had my AC unit serviced(only a few feet from the hot water burner/tank.). I'm afraid the guy pulled a quick one on me...in order to come back to fix that'll cost me $200....but really a "quick fix"

  1. can't help you.but i bet you are right about the service guy.they do that to my automobile all the time.i bring it in for something the next week something else is wrong.

  2. A hot water tank heated by gas has a thermo coupler this device tells the gas supply valve that the pilot is lit this is probubly the culprit . It's not likly a serviceman could put a faulty one in that would wait two weeks to go bad.the gas co. can send someone to check this for You.

  3. Your question doesn't include this information.  You ARE holding down the correct button to let gas flow to the pilot light, right?  The main control k**b is set to pilot, right?  Is the gas valve on the line feeding the water heater open?  The controls for gas water heaters very, very seldom fail in the manner you describe so suspect some one of the things above is the problem.

  4. It's rare to have a faulty gas valve.  Are any of the other gas-using appliances working?  Sometimes the gas companies do repairs, or meter change-outs, and there is air in the lines.  Which will eventually be replaced by the gas.

I doubt the other guy tried to pull a fast one.  Have you had no hot water for 2 weeks?
