Question:

Hotel bartender?

I'm looking to get a bartending job at the holiday inn or a simple hotel. Lets imagine I roll into the bar, have a beer, and get to know the bartender a bit. I wonder if I could ask to work for free part time in return for training. This would be with no tips and probably doing most cleaning up. Has anyone ever tried anything like this before in a hotel? I'm trying to stay away from hole in the wall mom and pop bars to train in just because of the negative atmosphere.

thanks if anyone can offer advice ;)

  1. Never tried it, but if you seem responsible he may say yes. Don't ask the first day, though. Too pushy.

  2. Go take a bartending course... they can PLACE you.

  3. Your appearance means everything. Start of as a bus person. Good luck.

  4. The "hole in the wall" type places are the ones that might take you on that way..

Due to company policies/security/loss prevention/ insurance reasons,Chain hotels/companies aren't going to let anyone that isn't employed there come behind the counter.

  5. Getting a job in a hotel could require you having experience prior to getting hired. I worked, bars , clubs, hotels and restaurants bartending...and I suppose most of us usually, depending on the environment have too much going on to train, however...it's always nice to train someone and if they were anything like me, they'll be glad to take you on. Asking the bartender might not be a great idea, try the manager or someone with a higher position as the bartender might be hesitant because he lacks the authority to hire you

    good luck!

  6. local bars and the word free are synonymous

  7. It is illegal to work for free. You have to be on the payroll especially behind a bar. If an inspector walked in and found someone behind the bar that is not specifically on the payroll to work behind the bar the whole establishment would be shut down. Fill out an application like everyone else and quit looking for shortcuts, you don't get something for nothing.
