Hotels in relation to City?

We'll be traveling all over Italy via Rental Car for 2 weeks. Would it be smarter for us to stay in Hotels downtown in the cities or on the outskirts of the Cities? We are trying to determine whether it would be smarter to stay in the dowtowns so we can leave our car at the hotel and walk to the sights. Or is driving to a downtown hotel too hectic? Any suggestions?

  1. Hello

You can stay in villas, apartment as well. If you are going to rent apartment or flat there you get privacy and freedom to enjoy your vacation as you wish.

You can also hire resort and farmhouse as well. With such accommodation options you can request for more services you need such as swimming pool, internet connection, tennis court, beautiful garden etc...

  2. Car theft is an unfortunate problem in Italy- in certain cities more than others, but still a big concern for tourists. Wherever you stay- make sure they have a secure parking area. I'd recommend staying on the city outskirts (more likely to have a hotel with a carpark) that is located near a metro station or major bus/train stop. Driving in the city isn't any worse than driving in any big city in the States or other European cities but finding somewhere to park can be a nightmare.

  3. I've lived in northern Italy for 9 years. When I go to Rome, Naples, Venice, Florence, Cinque Terre ... for a few days I leave the car at home, take the train, and stay in the city center close to the places I want to see.

It's not that it's so bad driving in the cities (except maybe Naples), but it is expensive to park, can be difficult to find parking, and it's cheaper for me to take the train since I'm usually on my own. The car is much more useful when you're going somewhere less accessible by train (like the Amalfi Coast or the Chianti region). Sometimes in the summer, driving in the cities can be restricted due to pollution levels.

I'd recommend that in the larger cities, you stay on the outskirts of the city near a train station. If you're someplace like Bolzano, Trento, Verona, Pisa, Parma ... find someplace close to the attractions.
