We're also off to Rome in September- our choice of hotel is the Napoleon on Pizza Vittorio Emanuele... not exactly on top of Trevi, but only 10 metres from the metro and a block away from Termini. One that I like is the Accademia. It's just around the corner from the fountain (about 1 minute walk) and highly rated by previous guests: http://en.venere.com/hotels_rome/fontana...

You can check several other options in the same general area using the map feature on the Venere site - then you can sort within the district by price, rating or other criteria.

Another one that is very nice, but a little more expensive is the Hotel Regno: http://en.venere.com/hotels_rome/fontana... It's between Trevi Fountain and the Pantheon.
