Former http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Gerard-c14664 Houllier believes that the Reds need to be more patient with Kenny Dalglish and believes that the club are headed in the right direction.
The 64 year old Frenchman came out to the much needed support of the Scott, after the Reds manager was coming under increasing pressure following a run of dismal performances in the league.
Houllier, who was last the manager of Aston Villa, believed that the expectation level at Anfield is very high. However, he advised the club to show a little bit of patience with Dalglish.
He put forward the example of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Job-c18684 for their respective clubs.
He recounted that the Reds finished runner-up in the league under Rafa Benitez and himself. Despite that, the club expected them to win the league and more cups for the Reds.
"The obsession is the league. Rafa Benitez finished second and I finished second once, but for all the cups we won, they wanted us to win the league."
The Frenchman admitted though that the criticism meted out on Dalglish shows that the club is headed in the right direction.
Liverpool won the Carling Cup earlier in February and Dalglish’s side is eyeing an English domestic cup double by winning the FA Cup. Currently, the Reds have made it into the semi-final of the competition.
"They won the League Cup, the same way we did in 2001," Houllier said. "It's a good sign for the future. I think he's heading in the same direction, just give him some time.”
The former Reds boss also cast light on the fact that Dalglish’s staff are working efficiently under his management and they are standing behind him in this difficult time. He also pointed out that things can change very rapidly in football and a person
can become a hero in no time.
He gave examples of Moyes and Wenger, who themselves went through a lean patch during their stint at their respective clubs.
"There was a time when http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/David-c10409 Moyes was criticised and Arsene was criticised - see where they are now. It's a roller-coaster."
Liverpool have introduced a couple of new players in the current season and the Reds performance has also been marred by some injury problems. Houllier believed that the club needed another year for the new players to accustom themselves at Anfield.
"They have had a lot of recruitment done and a lot of problems, so give him some time.”
The Reds will visit Tyneside on Sunday, where they will take on Newcastle United in a Premier League match.
