Question:

House Color Scheme? Black?

Hi...I was just wondering if anyone has done the same exterior color scheme as my husband and I just chose for our new house. We chose light tannish color for the base, a beautiful dark red as the accent(gables), and black trim and shudders. We want it to look different than all the other houses on the block. They have all chosen very "safe" colors with white trim. We are a young couple and just feel bored with going with a plain neutral color scheme. I was just wondering if anyone has done anything similar? How did it turn out? Thanks:)

  1. It sounds cool, but I'd be a little concerned about the black, considering the rest of the neighborhood has gone neutral.  That's not to say you can't do something with more impact, but you don't want to stand out like a sore thumb, either.  How about tan/dark red/dark olive (or a dark version of the tan)?  The dark red will be a daring accent...both red and black sounds like too much.  Also, if you are in an HOA, make sure the board approves your color scheme.  People move into developments all the time and think they can paint however they want to and then get stung when they find out they have to repaint it to meet the HOA restrictions.

  2. Personally, never have painted a house, mine or any other's. However, I like the sound of it....you should post pics...also, really get fun with your landscaping!! contrast will lookd great up against your house!

  3. I'm looking out my window at my neighbor's home which is the same color scheme.  I think it looks stunning, sophisticated and elegant on their home.  My own home is yellow, black gables, doors and shutters with white trim, but I am thinking of changing my front door color to a beautiful Elizabeth Arden dark red because it looks so good on their home.

  4. Sounds different, one thing about paint jobs...you can always cover it again. How do the neighbors feel about it? This may be an issue that could snowball. Bad neighbors are no fun. I'd like to see a picture of it when your finished. Have fun!

  5. These colors work well together. In fact my painter has done a few homes in this color combination. It makes a statement but isnt over the top bold. I am sure that you will like these colors for many years to come.

  6. When I visited Seattle last year, I was most impressed by the house colors that many people chose. Most were brightly colored, and although I questioned some combos (bright purple with teal trim???), I thought that those with black trim looked super sharp. I think what you've chosen sounds terrific.
