House I bought has a water softener but I dont have hard water

Why would the house I bought have water softener in the basement all hooked up, have the salt pellet bags downstairs and look as if it is being used when I don't have hard water at my house?

I bought the house a year ago. Haven't put salt in it since I bought it.. Is there a reasoning to this?

Thank you

  1. Softer water washes away soap faster.  This decreases shower time and rinse water for dishes.  It's not necessary, but that's why some folks do it.

  2. disconnect the softener and you can sell this unitn No need to have the extra expense.

  3. I would take it out.  Water softeners are a salt replacement process, taking out calcium salts and replacing them with sodium salts.  It ain't good for you.

  4. Whoever installed it thought the water was hard enough to soften.  Some people like soft water, some people don't.  You should be able to bypass the softener with a valve that is already installed.

  5. the hardness of the water can vary from time to time

  6. It is possible that there was hard water running to your home previously from a different location than where it's piped from now. My city just changed from local water to water from Lake Michigan and they clean and soften it really well. I have no more need for my softener. Disconnect it and put it on Ebay or Craig's List. may as well make some money on it.
