House cleaning....?

Okay so me and my friend are 20 yrs old, both looking for jobs. We kinda came up with the idea of cleaning homes. My mom has been in the home cleaning business for about 27 years now.

So I kinda got the idea form her, So I was just wondering what kind of price that I should start out with charging clients. My mom charges about 20-30 an hour, sometimes more depending on the house. But for a starter such as myself what would be a good rate, I was thinking around $15/hr.??

Also since my friend and I might be doing it together, what should the price be charged for each of us or how should it be split up so thats its even??

  1. That's a good idea! If your mother charges about 20-30 an hour,I think  that 15/h,as you are starting, is a good price.

  2. I cleaned houses years ago when my kids were younger I charged a flat rate of $70 for a 2-3 hours of work. If it goes over 3 hours then I charge an additional $15 per hour. I am not sure this makes good money for two people though.

  3. I would not charge by the hour, but by the job.  I cleaned a lady's house for her that took me 2 1/2 hours.  I was paid $95.  As you get used to cleaning the houses, you will get faster.  You want to do a great job in a minimal amount of time.  If you think the house will take 3 hours to clean in the beginning, charge a flat rate of say $60.  You know you will be making at least 20/hr.  As you get faster, you will be making more an hour.

I would not charge 1/2 the going rate just because you are a beginner.  You can have good rates, but make them competitive.  Otherwise, people may think your work is not high quality.

  4. I am paying $20/hr to the lady that cleans my apartment.
