House of the Dead Overkill gets 3DTV - less 3D! Only on PlayStation though
In one of the most heart-warming video game announcements in recent history, Sega have announced that the PlayStation 3 version of the game will support 3D without the need for a 3D enabled Television set.
The fact of the matter is that 3D gaming is still not as accessible as Sony and other consumer electronics manufacturers would like to believe, as a majority of gaming still takes place on standard televisions. These ‘standard’ television users view 3D gaming
as just out of their reach and are constantly teased by the ‘3D enabled’ tag on the cover of some of the games.
While Sony may be trying to address the issue by launching an affordable 3D TV set, Sega, on the other hand, seem to want to give gamers who do not have 3D televisions the opportunity to play their latest game, House of the Dead Overkill, without having
to part with an arm and a leg.
There is a catch however, as the 3D experience will not be the top of the line stereoscopic 3D experience, but rather the much more conventional and old school, anaglyphic one. For those readers who do not what anaglyphic means, well in short, it means those
gamers will have to wear those red and cyan coloured lens paper glasses in order to enjoy the extra dimension-ed experience.
The glasses themselves will be included with the game itself, provided of course gamers purchase the Blu-Ray disc instead of purchasing it online and downloading it. However, for those who have donated organs in order to purchase fully fledged stereoscopic
3D televisions, the option for the higher end extra dimension is there as well.
The move from Sega will be a welcome one, as it not only takes advantage of the platform’s features, but provides a true B-movie experience, which is in line with the theme of the game itself.
Whether or not the extra feature will add to the overall experience or whether it is just a cheap tacked on marketing gimmick is still anybody’s guess as no one has tested out the game in its new look.
House of the Dead Overkill for the PlayStation 3 is a remake, or rather a re-mastering of the game which was originally released on the Nintendo Wii. The game has received numerous awards, mostly for the humour in the game and was has earned a reputation
for having more swear words than zombies in the game.
However, the game will give arcade shooter fans the option of putting to the PlayStation Move to some use as the game is fully compatible with the motion controlled peripheral.
