Question:

House sharing and utility bills?

I rent the largest bedroom (pay the highest rent of anyone in the house) which happens to be above the garage in a single family home that I share with 2 other adults. The location of the room causes it to be VERY hot in the summer and cold in the winter. We have central AC however the air does not seem to circulate on the 2nd level at all and that is probably because we have one thermostat for the whole house. Last month I purchased a portable 14,000BTU AC unit to cool my bedroom down in the summer months. I use the unit after work and throughout the night but I turn it off when I leave for work. And I run the AC unit throughout the weekends when I'm home. I keep the temp around 75 degrees. Should I offer to pay extra above my share of the electric bill? If so, how much extra would be fair? They don't know about the AC unit, I didn't tell them before I bought the thing, thinking the electric bill wouldn't go up that much.

What would you expect as a roommate in this situation?

  1. Why don't you compare your new utility bill to the few months' prior bills and offer to pay the averaged difference?
