1. Many builders have a spoken, contractual, or unspoken warranty that if there are major problems with the home within the first year, you can contact the builder for resolution.

You might want to contact him first, and if he refuses to do anything, I would seek the advice of an attorney.

Yes, you may be able to kill it, but if it was not built correctly (or insulated) in the first place, it will just grow back.

I suggest you take pictures of it and get someone in to test it (like a home inspector) who will document the problem. And maybe give that attorney a call for good measure. You need to follow the correct steps of action, but you can't just leave it there while everybody figures out what to do.

The following pages on insulation may be helpful if you discover that a lack of insulation is causing condensation on the inside of the drywall and coming through.

    Hope this helps.

  2. The above answers are okay if your only looking to clean up the mold. You need to find the source of the moisture which will lead to future problems. You can clean it all you want, but it will return if the problem that caused the mold isn't eliminated.

  3. Sounds like a moisture problem. The green is probably mold. Use a 50/50 mix of bleach and water to remove and kill it. Start checking to see where the moisture is coming from.

  4. See answers to similar question about mouldy smell in cellar. I find that it is best to scrape and then wash the walls using a toilet cleaner of 7% sodium hypochloride, but be careful and take precautions, it hurts the skin and eyes. Wash out or off immediately!
