Question:

House training a puppy with a baby/toddler?

Our 9 week old puppy does really well in house training unless he has to go and he is near our 20 month old son. I think it is that he can smell the diapers on him and he is like, 'Oh he pees here so I will.'

(He also goes in the nursery where we have our newborns diaper pail, but it's blocked off most of the time)

How do I teach him not to go in the house when he is smelling that the little ones can?

  1. No one had the right to give you a puppy when you have a child under two-years-old.  Give your puppy to someone who can take care of it.  You do not have the time for a puppy and a baby.  He is only 9-weeks-old, the bladder isn't grown until 6-months-old, and puppies are not fully potty trained until 1-year-old.  Please give your puppy away, it is just tooo cruel to keep him.

  2. You just have to be consistent.  Always be watching him when he's in the house.   When he starts sniffing around or he starts to "go" immediately pick him up and take him outside.  Once he goes, praise and treat.  He'll catch on eventually.

  3. Sounds like you need to invest in some gates.. either baby ones or ones like  this

http://pampered-puppy.zlio.net/c5003626-... that is so you can see and price... click through for information about them. Make sure to measure your door or hall openings.  WE have two gates set up to sanction off the dining room for the dogs or we put in hallway.

I also have blog on housebreaking that might be useful

Good luck... put the dog and babe on schedule if possible.

  4. hmm maybe if you have a yard and whn it is getting close to the time for puppy to go you go out with your son and the pup and maybe this will help i dnt knw this is far fetched but maybe you can change you son after you come in from the dog thing so he dnt smell it and only smells it whn he goes out  good luck

  5. Well Its hard, I hired a Trainer to Train my Two Dogs. And Now When They Need to Go .... , They Bark and the Door So i can Walk them.

  6. We have a string of bells on the front and back door. Any time our 18month old or the 4month old pup make it ring I jump up put shoes on the little guy and a leash on the pup and we all go out side. As soon as we get back in, if little guy needed a change, i change his rump..Also something that helps mask the baby pee is some baby powder, when you change the diaper just powder some on.

The bells to me are less annoying than the barking or scratching at the door.

hope this helps hun. And good luck
