Household plumbing. What is a pressure line?

The basement floor has heaved up. We suspect from water pressure beneath the concrete floor. Someone suggested the source might be a leaking pressure line. I don't know what that is.

  1. in most cases, this water pressure from below is from the water table, not from a pipe.  although a broken pipe shouldn't be ruled out.

if it's the water table, you'll need a sump pit dug into your floor down there, to allow the water somewhere to go.  it's trying to push up, but has no release, so it pushes your floor up and cracks it instead.  concrete is strong, but remember, that slab is only about 3" thick, and spreads the whole size of your basement.  against rising water, it's not that strong.

i would dig the sump pit in first, and worry about the cause after.  you need to relieve that pressure ASAP!!  before any further damage.

once that's finished, you should call the town.  I've done this before, and you can test for a leak in your water main by shutting off the valve inside your home, and placing the curb key (the tool the town guy will use to turn off your water) on the curb stop (the valve underground) and putting his ear on the key.  you can actually HEAR the water if it's flowing through a leak or not.

this could cost you $300 if you just need a sump, or a WHOLE LOT MORE if it's a break.

  2. 2 lines in plumbing preasure and drain.

  3. A pressure line would be a supply line that supplies water pressure to your house.
