Housewarming Party/Passover Issue?

Hi!

I'm having my housewarming party this upcoming Saturday and it will still be passover. I have guests coming that can only eat Kosher for Passover food. My menu consists of macaroni and cheese, chips, dip, salsa, veggies, cheese tray, etc.... but none of it is OK for Passover. I'm on a tight budget. What can I serve to my guests who are celebrating the holiday?

  1. Why don't you call your friends and ask them?  I think they would feel heartened to know that you care so deeply about them and their needs.  They can probably enlighten you as to the kosher restrictions and let you know how strongly they observe them.  It will be good to know for future reference!  Good luck in your new home!

  2. Look for the letter "K" in a circle.  That will tell you if it's kosher.  Kosher has a lot of requirements other than that.  You can't mix meat and milk products (so like no sandwiches with cheese and meat), fish is ok but not shrimp and stuff like that...even the dishes and pots and pans make a difference.  To be safe, you could call someone you know well and ask for some advice on what to serve so that the kosher keeping folks will have something too.  If you use paper plates and plastic forks you'll avoid that problem.  You probably don't keep two separate sets of dishes.  Anything you cook in the oven can be cooked in a disposable foil pan.

It can be tricky, but being concerned about their sensibilities will mean a lot to your friends.  I'm an old fashioned Catholic, and don't eat meat on Fridays.  It's always nice when I go to someone's house and they've taken that into consideration.  Not eliminating meat, but making sure there's a pasta or vegetable dish that's an entree.  More than once, I've only had salad when everyone else was eating spaghetti and meatballs or pepperoni pizza.

  3. Really??  Does the menu plan really include "macaroni", "chips" (perhaps tortilla-corn)?

My understanding is no commercial manufacturers make anything like these "Kosher for Passover food" items.  good luck!!

I you do find them please post where you found them so we can all learn something new!
