Question:

Housing allowance for Pastors?

I'm in seminary and I know that their are possibilities that I will have a housing allowance oppose to a parsonage. I do not understand the concept of a housing allowance at all. I usually hear people say that the housing allowance is around $20,000 a year. My question is (hypothetically of course) can you go over that. Like if I have a $12,000,000 house, can I just use the $20,000 as a small percentage in my mortgage or are their limits to the cost of the house.

    Thank you

  2. Usually there is no limit to the cost of the house. Your housing allowance will be comprable to the area and the size of the church. It is usually paid monthly, not upfront for the year. Unless you are a pastor at a mega-church I doubt that you will be able to afford a 12 million dollar house.

  3. Not many pastors live in a $12 million dollar home...so I assume that's a typo.  However, if the allowance is $20,000 and you wish to go over this amount...you can likely do so but will have to pay the extra amount out of your own salary

  4. Jehovah Jirah...God is your provider.

    I guess I don't get "protocol".
