Housing benefit backdating appeal?

Ok, so i've had some trouble with rent since i lost my job and did not realise that i could get housing benefit as i live as a private tenant. Anyway cut along story short, my landlords estate agents after 2months advised me to go to the housing benefit and apply for backdated as well as help with covering my rent costs.

So i went, they awarded me with help for my current rent but refused to give me backdating as i did not show 'good cause', after going through the appeal process i now have a tribunal coming up.

I was wondering if it was worth me getting representation to make sure i explain myself properly or just going on my own? How do these tribunals work? And will there be someone there already to help me (on the courts behalf).

if you are British take all the help you can get as the benefit system and housing situation is geared not to our own people anymore. you should be entitled to legal aid get down the C.A.B and have a chat with them it's free but don't go to court and try and fight the system on your own as it's their to hinder the British people and help the rest.

You are entitled to take someone to present your case.

There will be someone from the tribunal to help, but they can only offer help on matters of procedure and law. They will not help you present your case.

Incidenatlly it's not a court, it's a tribunal.

If you go along to the Citizen's Advice Bureau they may have someone that can represent you if not they will point you in the right direction and give you advice.  All the best to you.

get a job and take responsibility for yourself. u cant expect anyone to believe after 2 months u cant find one.
