  1. your local council & local social services can probably help you.  often...help for disabled people..such as stair lifts, hand rails, bath hoists...can all be applied for from these people - they will give you the best advice i think.

  2. It all depends on the severity of disability and what disability the person has.

Everyone in the UK who is over the age of 18 is eligible for an assessment of need under Fair Access to Care Services (FACS) from their local authority. This is an holistic assessment of need and would look at housing issues also.

FACS looks at the risk to individuals losing their independence and determines where help is needed.  FACS has 4 bands and following the assessment, the individual will either banded Critical, Substantial, Moderate or Low.

Each local council operates differently in their eligibility criteria from then and you're best searching your local council as to what level they operate when they will assist financially.  Some councils will provide financial assistance for people banded just Critical or some will provide assistance for those banded Moderate and above.  However, if not elibigle for social care help, social services will sign post you where you need to go.

In short, I would contact your local social service office and ask for an assessment, your social worker or care manager will then assist you from there.

I work with adults with learning disabilities and not physical disabilities so I don't know any organisations in that area - sorry!

  3. There are thousands of organizations that can help. Narrowing down means finding out what your disability is and how it limits you, what you can afford, how old you are, where you want to be, etc.

If you are low income you different options than people with higher incomes.

People over 50, 55, 65 may have options younger people do not.

Some disabilities can be easily accommodated after a place is built, but others cannot.

  4. what kind of disability--cognitive/physical etc?

for a person who is cognitively impaired

contact teh state department of developmental disabilities

for a physical disabiity call teh state department of disability services

  5. Contact the nearest Independent Living Center (ILC). They should be able to give the type of information that you want.

  6. Your State's Department of Healthcare Services usually located in the same town as the State's Capital is your first stop. Then as another answer has pointed out Independant Living Centers are also located in most metropolatian areas as is Golden Umbrella. But I would go for the Paralized Veterans magazine, and online just punch in The Disabilities Act for lots of direction. Homecare involves In-Home Support Services handles homecare management along the County guidlelines, AARP.Org IS A GREAT RESOURCE TOO.  Your Senior Connection helps also. many many more, but IHSS and Dept of .

Healthcare Services will get you there faster...

It's funny that after so many years of doing good live-in care for severally disabled my last client of 7 yrs has passed away in April leaving me his mobile which is compeletly adapted for physical disabilities and I can't find one good resource to find another so as not to let all that is handicapped go to waste...Good Luck  druski
