Houston Astros’ Bo Porter, Lucas Harrell showing up for social causes - MLB News
Houston Astros’ manager Bo Porter and pitcher Lucas Harrell will be participating in separate charity events this coming weekend. Harrell will participate in the American Diabetes Association’s Step Out event while manager Porter will be joining the VETSports
for their charity softball tournament on Saturday.
Lucas has been an advocate for the diabetes research for the last two years after his father Brad was diagnosed with the disease. The event takes place on Saturday morning at Minute Maid Park, the Astros’ home.
The fans will be able to participate by walking as a part of the pitcher’s contingent as a show of support to his fund raising efforts. Donations for the cause can be made online. The pitcher himself is quite excited and expects a decent crowd to be attending
the event. Orbit, the mascot for the Astros, will also be present on the occasion along with the ball club’s front office staff.
Lucas, who will be participating in the event for the first time, hoped that more people will turn out. "I'm hoping to have a large turnout," Harrell said. "I'd like to do this every year and grow bigger and bigger. I would like 5,000, 6,000 people showing
up, but you never know in situations like this. It's my first time doing it and you never know how many people will show up. I know we'll have a large turnout."
His coach, Bo Porter will be throwing a ceremonial opening pitch at the Houston Sportsplex to kick off a VetSports arranged softball tournament supporting the wounded soldiers. The organisation longs to help wounded veterans and help them overcome their
injuries through rehabilitation programs and adaptive sports. The Astros shooting stars and club’s mascot Orbit will also be present on the occasion.
The event will include a match between the Houston Police Department and the VetSports team of wounded veterans. The event will include a men’s softball event on Saturday and on Sunday, a coed softball tournament.
Major League Baseball and its players have a history of fulfilling their social responsibilities. Just recently, the teams and players have been quite active in order to rehabilitate the victims of the super storm Sandy. MLB gave $1 million through various
well known charities and several franchises and players also made donations in form of monetary help as well as providing the victims with the required supplies.
These baseball personalities are certainly setting a very good example for others to follow. Other players both in baseball and other sports should follow suit and step up to the plate to perform charitable work. These athletes should be appreciated and
followed for the good work they are doing in an effort of making the society a better one.
