Houston Astros’ Bo Porter gets Dave Trembley, John Mallee on coaching staff – MLB Update
Newly appointed Houston Astros’ Coach Bo Porter had four coaches added to his staff on Monday. Pitching coach Doug Brocail and third base coach Dave Clark were retained on the coaching staff by the Astros.
The two new entrants on the staff are former Baltimore Orioles’ Manager Dave Trembley and John Mallee, who has been appointed as the hitting coach. Duties of Dave Trembley and Dave Clark are yet to be announced.
Porter was all praise for Trembley who has at one staged coached him as well. He was also confident that the experience of the old war horse will be very useful in elevating team’s performance.
Porter said, “He’s been in baseball for 26 some-odd years. He’s a very articulate person, he’s a very detail-oriented person – a lot of the things that I look at as basically key components of getting where it is we’re trying to go at an accelerated pace”.
His last assignment was with the Atlanta Braves as a Minor League field coordinator. He also has had stints with various Minor League teams as manager.
John Mallee, who was Seattle Marlins’ hitting college in 2010-11, will also be a useful addition to the coaching staff. Manager Porter had no shortage of kind words for John Mallee either.
He added, “When you talk to guys like Chris Coghlan, who won the rookie of the year; Gaby Sanchez, who went on to be an All-Star; from Dan Uggla to Cody Ross to Jeremy Hermida to Josh Willingham — all of those guys absolutely rave about this guy.”
This was pitching coach Brocail’s first season with the Houston Astros. The 45-year-old made his last appearance of a start stop Major League career in 2009 for the Astros.
Dave Clark has been the third base coach for the Astros for four years now. His association with Houston goes back to 2005. The 50-year-old appeared for seven different ball clubs in his 12-year long Major League career. Incidentally, Houston Astros was
the last team he represented as a player.
Manager Porter said that now the team management is looking forward to adding the last two pieces to the coaching staff. He was also content with the fact that he can now call Houston his full time home, a city where he has resided for more than two decades.
His last stint was with Washington Nationals as the third base coach which lasted two years.
Houston Astros ended up at the very bottom of the National League Central. Their win-loss ratio was easily the worst in all of Major League Baseball with the closest team nine wins ahead. It will take some serious and sincere efforts from the new manager
and coaching staff to get this team backing on winning track. This young Astros team will need all the help it can get from their coaching staff for a successful 2013 regular season.
