Houston Astros’ J.D. Martinez looking for strong show in Major League Baseball – Baseball news
Houston Astros’ left fielder J.D. Martinez is having a good time in the Major League at the moment. He is maintaining an even .250 batting average. However, his season did not start on a great note as he had to play in the Minor League.
He was not considered for the Major League after the spring training and was playing for the Houston Astros’s Double-A associate Corpus Christi Hooks. His season there lasted five games with a .300 batting average in 20 plate appearances.
Originally, J.D. was a 20th round pick by the Astros in the 2009 MLB’s Amateur Draft. His professional career kicked off the same year at the age of 21 with the Tri-City Valley Cats, a short-season A team in the New York-Pennsylvania League. Courtesy of
some good performances, the 6ft 3in tall hitter moved up the ranks in the Minor League pretty swiftly.
Martinez made his debut in the big leagues in 2011 and is in his third season of Major League. During the period, he has had limited opportunities and has seen some rough times.
His overall numbers to date in all MLB are decent. He has a .252 batting average and a .309 on-base percentage. He has driven in 104 runs and has hit21 home-runs in a total of 194 games.
Injuries to some key players on the Astros 40 man roster opened the door for the 25-year-old in the current season and he seems to be grabbing the opportunity with both hands.
In the 28 games he has so far played this season, he has hit four home-runs as well as driven in 14 in 88 at-bats. Those numbers reflect well on him and he needs to continue in the same fashion to further solidify his position in the team.
Houston Astros’ manager Bo Porter seems to like the performance shown by J.D. and feels that provided with proper chances, the batter can certainly score some good runs in the Majors.
“He’s really seeing the ball well, and he’s a guy that definitely has a chance to be a run producer in this league,” Porter said.
He has mostly played as a left fielder in 2013 and maintains a perfect record with 19 put outs and a single assist from the 20 total chances he has had. However, in the four games he played as a right fielder, he committed an error from the six chances that
he had.
Houston Astros are in a rebuilding phase at this point in time. It is important that Martinez continues to perform well and grabs a permanent spot in the Astros roster. It will take a lot of effort but as the cliché goes, all things in life worth having
do not come easy, hard work and perseverance are the way to move forward.
