Houston Astros are without GM Ed Wade, Team President Tal Smith -MLB News
In a hugely surprising move, the Houston Astros of Major League Baseball (MLB), let go of their general manager, Ed Wade, along with team president, Tal Smith, an announcement which was made by the teams’ chief executive officer, George Postolos, on Sunday
night, November 27, 2011.
Fortunately, it was not something that Wade and Smith were not expecting, since the teams’ upper management had given the two senior officials prior notifications that they would be let go.
“With the change in ownership, we would like a fresh start in baseball operations,” Postolos said in a statement issued though the team late Sunday. “We have told Ed and Tal that we are making a change. We recognize their dedication to the Houston Astros.
We thank each of them for their significant contributions and many years of service to the Astros, and wish them our very best as they pursue new opportunities.”
The Astros have yet to appoint a new GM in place of Ed Wade, and have not made any permanent selections currently, but have placed assistant general manager, David Gottfried, as their interim GM, for the time being until a replacement is found.
Postolos made it clear that they do currently not have any one in mind, but are searching for nearly the perfect candidate.
“We are searching for a candidate who has the knowledge, skills and experience to build a winner and a strong commitment to player development in order to sustain success,” Postolos added.
Wade had worked hard over the offseason in order to attract prospects into the organisation for a better performance when the new season kicks off next year, something which has certainly disappointed him to not being able to witness.
He had been in the organisation since September of 2007 and was also called into a meeting with the highest management of the team in order to review the rest of the staff working under him, which gives off signals that there might be further changes in
the lower staff in the upcoming days or so.
Tale Smith spent 17 years as the team president for a total of 35 years affiliated with the team.
